Artists
‘Duo Bosco’ is a guitar duo comprised of Murilo Tanouye and Joseph Littlefield. The two met at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2003, where they both went on to graduate with first class honours.
Murilo was born in Brazil and started as a popular guitarist versed in Samba and Bossa Nova styles. His wide range of musical interests has led him to pursue creative collaborations in a variety of ensembles and musical contexts, Duo Histoire being the most notable.
Murilo featured as a soloist with The Metropolitan Orchestra and has appeared in several festivals around Australia including Sydney Festival, Bellingen Music Festival, with groups such as Legs On The Wall, Taikoz, and the Glebe Baroque Ensemble. Murilo has performed in the US, Brazil, Europe, South Korea and Hong Kong. He has recently been appointed head of guitar at Ascham school.
Joseph has performed with some of Sydney's top classical ensembles including the Australian Opera and Balet Orchestra, Ensemble Offspring, Halcyon and the Sydney Chamber Opera company. He has also performed and recorded with baroque ensembles and personalities such as Salut Baroque and recordist Alicia Crossley. Joseph recorded an album of his own transcription of works by the late Gyorgy Ligeti after touring them in the U.S. and Europe. This has helped build a small but loyal fan base.
Joseph has also composed for and performed with TaikOz and has composed scores for several theatre productions and Australian films such as ‘Looby’, a film about a renowned Australian artist. He has also played with a variety of jazz, rock, hip-hop and African music groups (Usustu, On the Stoop, and the Jazz Hip Hop Freestyle Sessions).
Joseph plays a ‘Brahms guitar’, a specially designed instrument made for the prominent guitarist Paul Galbraith who mentored Joseph for a short but intensly productive time in 2018. The guitar is notable for it’s extended range with both higher and lower strings added, as well as its eccentric appearance. The instrument expands the range of music that the guitar is capable of adapting.
‘Duo Bosco’ will be performing the only complete transcription for guitar (we think) of all J.S. Bach’s Two and Three part inventions. They will be rounding the program out with some Brazilian choros and works by the late Australian composer Philip Houghton who was a very close mentor and friend.
